2008 Capilano Trials

EVENT DESCRIPTION
 
The 2008 Capilano Trials will qualify three men and three women for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in August of 2008. The competition will feature 4 men and 4 women from the United States and from Canada. A total of 16 athletes - men and women - will compete in the Trials.

The format of the competition is

FRIDAY

Single Elimination competition. The winner of this competition will be the first North American Qualifier. Therefore, on Friday evening one man and one woman will emerge with a ticket to Beijing

SATURDAY

Single Elimination competition. Friday's winner will no longer compete, Friday's finalist will be the top seed for Saturday and will get a bye in the Quarter Final round. The winner of this competition will be the second North American Qualifier.

SUNDAY

There will be 6 remaining players per gender. The competition format changes to a round robin and play-off format: The competition starts with 2 Round Robin groups of 3 players - Saturday's finalist will be the top seed. The group winners will play one play-off match for positions to determine the third North American qualification position. The group seconds will face off against each other for any alternate positions, as will the group third.


SEEDING: All seeding will be done by ITTF World Ranking - March 2008. No consideration will be given to separation by association.

DRAW: The first and second seed will be placed into the traditional positions 1 and 2; the third and fourth seed will be 'flipped' into position 3 and 4. Seeds 5-8 will be drawn into position 5-8 (#7 and #8 seeds will meet #1 or #2 seed).

On day 2, the previous day's finalist will be seeded into positon 1 and will have a bye in round 1; the highest ranked player - if not the previous day's finalist - will be seeded into position 2. Then the daw procedure as described above will be followed.

On day 3, the finalist of day 2 will be placed into position 1 of Group A. The remaining players will be 'snaked' into position by their ranking.
